Let’s start with the basics – the seven fundamental human emotions: fear, anger, guilt or embarrassment, surprise, sadness, happiness, and interest. Each of these emotions has played a significant role in my personal life, influencing how I manage and prepare for life’s challenges.

Fear is a constant companion in my life as a mother to three young Black boys. The ongoing fear of their safety in a world plagued by police brutality and unfair treatment of Black men is ever-present. It’s a weight I carry daily, shaping how I navigate the world and advocate for their well-being.

As athletes, integrating fear into our games can be both a challenge and an opportunity for growth. When I’m out for a run or diving into the ocean for a swim, fear can rear its head in the form of self-doubt or anxiety. But just as I push through the fear of the unknown currents in the ocean or the doubts creeping in during a long run, athletes can harness fear as fuel to propel them forward in heavy competition. Embracing fear allows us to confront challenges head-on, pushing past our comfort zones and achieving new heights of performance.

Anger arises when I witness intentional harm or disregard for human safety. Just last week, a reckless driver nearly collided with me while I was out for a run. The sheer disregard for others’ safety ignited a fire of anger within me, reminding me of the importance of standing up against injustice.

For athletes, anger can be a powerful motivator on the field or in the water. When faced with unfair calls from referees or opponents playing dirty, anger can fuel a fierce determination to outperform and overcome obstacles. Channeling that anger into focused intensity can give athletes an edge in heavy competition, driving them to push harder, run faster, and swim stronger than ever before.

Guilt is a familiar feeling for many athletes, especially when faced with setbacks or mistakes. Whether it’s missing a crucial shot or letting down teammates, guilt can weigh heavily on our minds. But like any emotion, guilt offers an opportunity for self-reflection and growth. By acknowledging our mistakes and learning from them, we can become stronger, more resilient athletes.

When I’m out on a long run or navigating the waves during an ocean swim, guilt can creep in when I feel like I’m not giving my all. But just as I push past the guilt and keep moving forward, athletes can use guilt as a motivator to train harder, focus on improvement, and strive for excellence in heavy competition. By embracing guilt as a catalyst for growth, athletes can turn setbacks into opportunities for learning and development.

Embarrassment creeps in when I fall short of my own expectations, like not completing assignments on time. But I’m learning to embrace imperfection and prioritize what truly matters, finding a newfound sense of balance in the process.

In the world of sports, embarrassment often accompanies moments of vulnerability or mistakes on the field. But rather than dwelling on these setbacks, athletes can use embarrassment as a stepping stone to resilience and growth. By owning our mistakes and showing humility, we create an environment where learning flourishes, and we become stronger, more adaptable competitors.

Surprise has been a recurring theme in my journey into motherhood. Each pregnancy brought unexpected twists and turns, leading to a rollercoaster of emotions – from joy and happiness to sadness and loss. Through it all, I’ve learned to cherish the unexpected and find beauty in life’s surprises.

For athletes, surprise can manifest as unexpected challenges or opportunities in heavy competition. Whether it’s facing a formidable opponent or executing a game-changing play, learning to adapt and thrive in the face of uncertainty is essential for success. By embracing the unexpected with resilience and grace, athletes can turn surprises into opportunities for growth and triumph on the field or in the water.

Sadness has been a companion on this journey, from the overwhelming demands of motherhood to the loss of a pregnancy. But amidst the tears, there’s resilience and growth, leading me to rediscover my own interests and pursue new opportunities, like running my first marathon.

In the world of sports, sadness often accompanies moments of defeat or disappointment. But rather than dwelling on these setbacks, athletes can use sadness as a catalyst for growth and determination. By acknowledging our emotions and processing them in healthy ways, we can emerge stronger and more resilient than before. Just as I find solace and strength in running through the sadness, athletes can find healing and renewal in the power of sport.

Interest is the final emotion in the spectrum, and it’s one that fuels our passion and drive. Whether it’s diving into a new hobby or pursuing a lifelong dream, interest motivates us to explore, learn, and grow.

For athletes, interest is what drives us to push our limits and strive for greatness. Whether it’s mastering a new technique or breaking a personal record, interest keeps us hungry for success and eager to embrace new challenges. By nurturing our curiosity and passion for the sport, athletes can unlock their full potential and achieve their wildest dreams.

Emotions, as renowned psychologists Eckman and Davidson (1990) suggest, are indicative of our ability to adapt to life’s challenges and tasks. As a sports mompreneur, navigating these emotions is part of the game – a constant journey of self-discovery, growth, and resilience.

So here’s to embracing the full spectrum of emotions, from fear to happiness and everything in between. It’s all part of the rich tapestry of life, shaping us into the resilient, compassionate, and empowered individuals we are meant to be.
